Jamshedpur (Economy India): A tragic lightning strike claimed the life of a 23-year-old woman and left her husband injured in Jharkhand‘s East Singhbhum district on Thursday afternoon, highlighting the growing dangers posed by thunderstorms and lightning during the monsoon season.
The incident occurred in Henselbil village, located under the jurisdiction of Potka Police Station, when the couple stepped outside their residence to dry clothes. Unexpectedly, severe weather conditions developed in the area, and a lightning bolt struck near them, causing devastating consequences.

Monsoon Brings Increased Lightning Risks
Lightning strikes remain one of the leading weather-related causes of death in several Indian states, particularly during the monsoon months.
States such as Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Uttar Pradesh regularly report casualties caused by thunderstorms and lightning every year.
Experts warn that changing weather patterns and increasing atmospheric instability have contributed to a rise in extreme weather events across many regions.

Authorities Issue Safety Advisory
Following the incident, authorities urged people to remain vigilant during thunderstorms and avoid outdoor activities whenever weather warnings are issued.
Meteorological experts recommend the following precautions:
âš¡ Immediately move indoors when thunder is heard.
âš¡ Avoid open fields, rooftops, and isolated areas during storms.
âš¡ Do not take shelter under trees, electric poles, or metal structures.
âš¡ Stay away from water bodies and electrical appliances.
âš¡ Follow weather forecasts and official alerts issued by local authorities.
âš¡ Avoid carrying metal objects in open areas during lightning activity.
Human Cost of Extreme Weather
The latest tragedy serves as a reminder of the risks faced by rural communities, where many daily activities are conducted outdoors and exposure to extreme weather conditions is often unavoidable.
Lightning-related deaths continue to pose a significant challenge despite growing awareness campaigns and advances in weather forecasting.
Experts stress that timely weather alerts, public awareness, and improved disaster preparedness can help reduce casualties and save lives.
