Indian forensic and tunnel rescue teams continue operations in Nepal; death toll reaches 939 as thousands remain missing
NEW DELHI (Economy India): India has intensified its relief and rescue efforts in flood-hit Nepal, with 158 Indian nationals rescued so far, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Monday.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared the latest update on X, stating that the number of Indians rescued had reached 158 as of 9 pm on August 31.
Indian Forensic Team Assists Nepal
A 19-member specialised forensic team from India continued its work in Kathmandu in coordination with Nepal Police’s Forensic Science Laboratory.
The team is assisting Nepalese authorities in improving the analysis of DNA samples to help identify the mortal remains of victims of the devastating floods.
Officials from both countries also discussed ways to optimise forensic protocols and documentation during the ongoing identification process.
Tunnel Rescue Operations Continue
India’s specialised tunnel rescue team is also working alongside the Nepali Army at the Chilime and Langtang hydropower sites.
Despite difficult weather conditions and challenging access at Chilime, the Indian team managed to establish a foothold at a tunnel. Rescue operations are expected to continue as teams work to reach people who may be trapped inside.
Nepal Flood Death Toll Rises to 939
The devastating flash floods have claimed 939 lives, according to authorities, while around 4,000 people remain missing.
More than 10,000 people have been rescued so far. However, intermittent rainfall, swollen rivers and damaged roads and bridges are making rescue and relief operations increasingly difficult.
Hydropower Workers Among Those Missing
Rescue teams are also searching for 639 workers and employees at various hydropower project sites in flood-affected areas.
A significant number of those workers are believed to be trapped inside tunnels, adding urgency to the ongoing rescue operations.

Flash Floods Devastate Nepal
The disaster struck on August 26, after a collapse or avalanche of ice and rock near the Nepal-Tibet border triggered devastating flash floods.
Several towns and villages in northern and central Nepal were severely affected. Infrastructure, including roads and bridges, has also suffered extensive damage, complicating access to affected communities.
India’s continued deployment of forensic specialists and tunnel rescue personnel reflects its ongoing coordination with Nepalese authorities as search, rescue and relief operations continue.
