The Indian captain described his experience to the Prime Minister after being seriously injured during the September 30 flydubai flight incident; the investigation into the co-pilot’s actions continues.
NEW DELHI, (Economy India): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke with Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot who was seriously injured during a dramatic incident aboard a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, and praised his courage in helping avert a potential disaster.
During the conversation, Machchhar described his experience during the incident and the actions he took after being attacked by his co-pilot. Modi praised the captain’s bravery and wished him a speedy recovery.

Modi Praises Captain’s Courage
The Prime Minister had on Thursday publicly praised Machchhar, saying the injured pilot demonstrated immense courage and determination while protecting the lives of passengers.
The Prime Minister’s Office said Modi credited Machchhar’s actions with helping save hundreds of lives and avert a major tragedy.
While addressing the centenary celebrations of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Modi also referred to the incident as an example of exceptional courage. He said Machchhar’s actions helped prevent another attack resembling the September 11, 2001, attacks.

What Happened Aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073
The incident occurred on September 30 aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 people on board, according to reporting on the incident.
The flight experienced a rapid descent of more than 14,000 feet in around 30 seconds after the co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar and attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s operation.
Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door. Passengers and crew members then intervened and restrained the co-pilot, while other pilots aboard the aircraft helped regain control.
The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.
Captain Machchhar’s Account
In his conversation with Modi, Machchhar described how he responded after the attack. Reuters reported that the captain said he managed to open the cockpit door despite his injuries, allowing passengers and crew to intervene.
Reports said Machchhar is recovering in hospital following the incident.
The Indian pilot has since received public praise from Indian and Israeli officials for his role in helping prevent a potentially catastrophic outcome.

Investigation Into Co-Pilot’s Motive Continues
The circumstances and motive behind the co-pilot’s actions remain under investigation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has alleged that the co-pilot had undergone extremist indoctrination, but Reuters reported that the motive and any possible wider connections had not been conclusively established at the time of reporting.
The United Arab Emirates, Israel and Saudi Arabia have been involved in investigations related to the incident.
Reuters also reported that Israel planned tighter checks on pilots operating flights into the country following the episode.
