New Delhi (Economy India): India is emerging as an increasingly important supplier of diesel to Europe as Russian fuel exports remain severely constrained and shipments from the United States begin to weaken.

According to data from Vortexa, a real-time energy and freight data and analytics provider, Indian refineries supplied around 60 per cent of the diesel transiting the Bab-el-Mandeb to Europe in August, highlighting India’s growing role in meeting European fuel requirements.

India Supplies 60% of Diesel Moving Through Bab-el-Mandeb

Around 2,00,000 barrels per day of diesel, or gasoil, transited the Bab-el-Mandeb in August on vessels bound for Europe, Vortexa said in a report.

The volume was close to the level recorded a year earlier, following a sharp disruption in flows through the strategic shipping route during March and April.

India accounted for approximately 60 per cent of the August volume, making the country’s refineries an increasingly significant source of diesel supplies for Europe’s eastern markets.

The development underscores the growing importance of Indian refining capacity in global petroleum product trade at a time when traditional supply routes and major exporters are facing disruptions.

Russian Diesel Exports Remain Constrained

European diesel markets have been affected by reduced Russian supplies, creating an opportunity for other major refining hubs to increase shipments.

Russia has historically been an important supplier of refined petroleum products to European markets. With Russian exports remaining severely constrained, European buyers have increasingly needed to source fuel from alternative suppliers.

At the same time, US diesel shipments to Europe have also started to weaken, further increasing the importance of supplies from countries such as India.

India’s Refining Capacity Supports Export Growth

India is the world’s fourth-largest refiner, with installed refining capacity of approximately 258.1 million tonnes per annum.

The country’s refining capacity exceeds domestic fuel demand by a significant margin, allowing Indian refiners to participate actively in international petroleum product markets.

This structural surplus has helped India establish itself as a major exporter of refined petroleum products, particularly diesel and other middle distillates.

The latest Vortexa data highlights how Indian refineries can play a larger role in supplying international markets when regional supply-demand balances are disrupted.

Bab-el-Mandeb Remains a Critical Trade Route

The Bab-el-Mandeb is a strategically important maritime passage connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the wider Indian Ocean.

Petroleum product flows through the route are closely watched by energy traders because disruptions can significantly affect shipping patterns, freight costs and regional fuel availability.

Diesel flows through the Bab-el-Mandeb nearly stalled in March and April before recovering in August to around 2,00,000 barrels per day on vessels destined for Europe.

The recovery, combined with India’s dominant share of the flows, demonstrates the increasing role of Asian refiners in Europe’s diesel supply chain.

India Gains Strategic Importance in Global Energy Trade

India’s expanding role as a diesel supplier to Europe reflects the country’s growing importance in global energy markets.

With substantial refining capacity, access to crude supplies from multiple regions and domestic demand below overall refining capability, Indian refiners are positioned to respond to changing international market conditions.

The shift also highlights how geopolitical developments and changes in global trade flows can reshape traditional energy supply chains.

For Europe, Indian diesel could become an increasingly important component of its diversified fuel supply, particularly when supplies from Russia and the US remain under pressure.

The latest trade flows could provide further opportunities for Indian refiners to strengthen their position in international markets.

However, future export volumes will depend on global diesel demand, crude oil prices, refinery margins, shipping conditions and geopolitical developments affecting major trade routes.

For now, the August figures underline India’s growing importance in Europe’s diesel market and its emergence as a critical alternative source of refined fuel.
