DHENKANAL (Economy India): Five people were killed and two others sustained injuries after a car plunged into a roadside pond in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district in the early hours of Thursday, police said.
The tragic accident occurred at around 3:00 am near Indipur village under the jurisdiction of the Dhenkanal Sadar Police Station. According to officials, seven young people, all between the ages of 25 and 28, were travelling together to attend a friend’s wedding when the vehicle reportedly lost control and veered off the road before falling into the pond.
Hearing the sound of the crash, local residents rushed to the spot and alerted the police and emergency services. Rescue teams, with the help of villagers, managed to pull the vehicle out of the water and rescue the occupants. However, five of them were declared dead, while the remaining two were seriously injured and shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The identities of the victims have not yet been officially disclosed. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Authorities are examining whether factors such as poor visibility, overspeeding, or driver fatigue may have contributed to the crash.
The incident has left the families of the victims in deep shock, as what was meant to be a joyful journey to attend a wedding turned into a devastating tragedy. Officials said further details will be shared after the investigation progresses.
