Focus on Boosting Domestic Coal Production and Reducing Import Dependency
NEW DELHI (ECONOMY INDIA): The Ministry of Coal conducted a detailed review of 71 captive and commercial coal mines across various phases of operational progress. The meeting, chaired by Additional Secretary and Nominated Authority, Mrs. Rupinder Brar, highlighted the government’s focus on increasing domestic coal production to meet rising energy demands.
Focus on Operationalizing Coal Blocks
During the meeting, the ministry assessed the status of coal mines auctioned in different stages. Emphasis was placed on ensuring swift operationalization of mines, particularly those in the advanced stages of regulatory approvals. Mrs. Brar urged the allottees to take immediate steps for expediting the process.
“These coal blocks are crucial for enhancing domestic coal supply. We must ensure they become operational at the earliest to reduce our dependency on coal imports,” said Mrs. Brar.
Mines Spread Across Nine States
The reviewed coal blocks are located across nine states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and West Bengal. These mines are currently in different stages of obtaining regulatory clearances.
The ministry stressed the need for fast-tracking approvals to ensure timely production. It was highlighted that these coal mines hold strategic importance in fulfilling the country’s growing energy needs and achieving energy security.
Ministry’s Active Role in Resolving Issues
The strategic review meeting underscores the Coal Ministry’s proactive role in resolving issues faced by coal block operators. The focus is on addressing hurdles that delay mining operations, such as obtaining environmental clearances and land acquisition.
