India and Bhutan Deepen Strategic Development Cooperation

(Economy India): India and Bhutan have reaffirmed their long-standing development partnership by reviewing the progress of New Delhi-supported projects in the Himalayan nation and signing a ₹4,000-crore concessional Line of Credit (LoC) agreement.

The two countries also agreed to expand cooperation in the health sector, reinforcing their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and supporting Bhutan’s socio-economic development.

High-Level Development Cooperation Talks

The discussions took place during the Fifth India-Bhutan Development Cooperation Talks, which were co-chaired by:

The meeting focused on the implementation of projects under Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan, which aims to accelerate sustainable economic growth, infrastructure development and social welfare.

₹4,000-Crore Line of Credit Signed

A major outcome of the talks was the signing of a ₹4,000-crore concessional Line of Credit (LoC) agreement.

The financing is expected to support infrastructure, connectivity and other development initiatives in Bhutan while further strengthening economic cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

Review of Development Projects

According to the Indian Embassy in Bhutan, both sides reviewed the implementation of India-supported projects across multiple sectors.

The discussions covered progress in:

  • Infrastructure development
  • Connectivity
  • Education
  • Healthcare
  • Capacity building
  • Economic development

The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the timely implementation of these projects.

Health Sector Cooperation Expanded

India and Bhutan also agreed to broaden collaboration in the healthcare sector.

The expanded partnership is expected to include support for healthcare infrastructure, medical services, training, and capacity-building initiatives aimed at improving public health outcomes in Bhutan.

Strong Bilateral Partnership

India has remained Bhutan’s largest development partner for decades, supporting numerous projects in hydropower, roads, education, healthcare, digital connectivity and institution building.

The latest agreement reflects the continued trust and close strategic relationship between the two neighbours.
