SYDNEY, (Economy india): A major trial has begun in the United States that could have significant implications for how Facebook and Instagram operate not only in America but potentially around the world.

The trial, which began in Oakland and is expected to continue for about six weeks, involves 29 US states taking legal action against Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram. California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey are leading the jury case on behalf of the other states.

At the centre of the case is a 233-page complaint filed in 2023. The states allege that Meta deliberately designed and monetised its social media platforms in ways that exploited the psychological vulnerabilities of children and teenagers.

The allegations focus on the way Meta’s platforms are designed, including features that prosecutors say can encourage young users to spend more time on the services despite potential risks to their wellbeing.

One of the key witnesses for the states is a former Meta safety engineer who became a whistleblower. Her testimony could provide important evidence about the company’s internal approach to child safety and platform design.

The case is being closely watched because its outcome could influence how social media companies are regulated and held accountable for the effects of their platforms on young users.

If the states succeed, Meta could face pressure to change aspects of Facebook and Instagram, particularly those involving children and teenagers. Such changes could eventually influence the company’s global policies because major technology platforms often apply changes across multiple markets.

The trial therefore has implications beyond the United States. Governments in other countries are increasingly examining the impact of social media on young people, data privacy and the responsibilities of technology companies.

A ruling against Meta could strengthen arguments for tougher regulations and greater protections for children on social media worldwide. Conversely, a victory for Meta could make it more difficult for governments and regulators to impose similar requirements.

The case could ultimately become an important test of how far social media companies can go in designing platforms that maximise engagement while balancing their responsibility to protect younger users.
