Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb Requests Currency Stability Facility During Talks with US Treasury
Islamabad (Economy India): Pakistan has sought USD 10 billion in economic assistance from the United States as part of efforts to strengthen its economy and stabilise its financial system.
According to reports, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb requested US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to provide a USD 10 billion Currency Exchange Stabilisation Facility during recent discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral economic cooperation.

Currency Stability in Focus
The proposed facility is intended to help Pakistan strengthen its foreign exchange reserves, stabilise the Pakistani rupee, and improve investor confidence amid continuing external financing pressures.
The request comes at a time when Pakistan is working to restore macroeconomic stability after facing prolonged challenges, including:
- High external debt
- Weak foreign exchange reserves
- Inflationary pressures
- Currency depreciation
- Fiscal deficits
Part of Wider Economic Recovery Efforts
The appeal to the United States follows Pakistan’s continued reliance on financial support from friendly nations and international institutions.
In recent months, the country has secured substantial financial assistance through multilateral lenders as well as rollover arrangements from strategic partners, including Saudi Arabia and China, to meet its external financing requirements.
Significance of the Request
If approved, the proposed USD 10 billion facility could:
- Strengthen Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves.
- Support exchange rate stability.
- Improve market confidence.
- Ease pressure on external financing requirements.
- Enhance the country’s ability to manage short-term economic risks.
However, economists note that long-term economic sustainability will continue to depend on structural reforms, export growth, higher foreign direct investment (FDI), and improved fiscal management.
Pakistan’s latest request reflects the government’s efforts to secure additional international financial support as it seeks to stabilise the economy and maintain financial resilience. Any decision by the United States regarding the proposed assistance is expected to be closely watched by investors and global financial markets.
