KATHMANDU, (Economy India): Nepal has formally requested India to recognise its National Identity Card (NID) as a valid travel document for Nepali citizens visiting India. If approved, the NID will be accepted alongside the existing citizenship certificate and passport for cross-border travel.
According to Nepal’s Department of Immigration, the proposal has been sent to the Indian government through diplomatic channels. The request was first forwarded by Nepal’s Home Ministry to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which then submitted it to the relevant Indian authorities.
Department of Immigration spokesperson Tika Ram Dhakal said the proposal has already been officially communicated and is now awaiting India’s response.
If India approves the request, the move is expected to make travel easier for thousands of Nepali citizens by providing an additional government-issued identity document for crossing the open border between the two neighboring countries.
The proposal reflects Nepal’s ongoing efforts to modernize its identification system while maintaining smooth people-to-people movement under the long-standing India-Nepal travel arrangements.
