Raipur (Economy India): Chhattisgarh Governor Ramen Deka on Saturday emphasized that maintaining a balance with nature is crucial for achieving sustainable development, warning that excessive exploitation of energy resources could have long-term consequences for the environment and future generations.
The Governor was speaking at the state-level inauguration of ‘Saksham 2025-26 – Conservation Capability Festival’, held at the Circuit House in Raipur. The nationwide awareness campaign is being organised from February 1 to February 14 with the support of public sector oil and gas companies to promote judicious use of petroleum products and energy conservation.

Energy Awareness Linked to Future Generations
Governor Deka described Saksham as a vital public awareness initiative directly linked to the future of coming generations. He said that while civilisation has progressed with access to multiple energy sources, their unchecked and excessive use could damage nature irreversibly.
“Over-extraction causes harm. For sustainable development, it is essential to maintain balance with nature,” he said, adding that clean air and clean water are fundamental rights, and rivers and trees must be preserved in their natural form.
Concerns Over Microplastics and Chemical Use
The Governor also highlighted the growing dangers of indiscriminate pesticide use and microplastics, stating that microplastic contamination has increased alarmingly and is now being detected even in cow milk.
He noted that humans themselves are causing the greatest harm to nature, making education and public awareness critical tools for environmental protection.

Call for Energy Conservation and Green Alternatives
Governor Deka stressed that awareness must translate into daily habits and lifestyle changes, not remain limited to speeches. He urged citizens to curb electricity misuse and adopt energy-saving practices at every level.
He cautioned that petroleum resources such as petrol and diesel are finite and that future generations will increasingly depend on alternative energy sources, including green energy and solar power. Excessive use of fossil fuels, he said, not only depletes resources but also accelerates environmental pollution.
Emphasis on Water Conservation and Tree Plantation
Calling for collective responsibility, the Governor appealed for tree plantation under the campaign ‘One Tree in the Name of Mother’ and emphasized urgent action on water conservation.
He pointed out that Chhattisgarh is witnessing excessive groundwater extraction and suggested that large farmers should construct farm ponds (dabris) to enable community-level benefits. The revival of traditional ponds and water bodies was also stressed.
“Society has given us a lot, and it is our duty to give back,” he said.
