LUCKNOW, (Economy india): A 25-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife following alleged harassment over dowry demands in Lucknow’s Mohanlalganj area, police officials said on Monday.

The case came to light after the victim’s father, identified as Ram Ghulam, submitted a written complaint to the police on August 28. In his complaint, he alleged that his daughter had been subjected to harassment and cruelty over dowry and was eventually murdered.

Following the complaint, the Mohanlalganj police station registered a case against the accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Police said the case has been registered under Section 80(2) of the BNS, which deals with dowry death, and Section 85, relating to cruelty by a husband or relatives of the husband towards a woman. Relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act have also been invoked.

After registering the case, police launched an investigation into the allegations and subsequently arrested the 25-year-old husband. Officials are now examining the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and collecting evidence related to the alleged dowry harassment.

The police are also looking into whether other family members were involved in allegedly harassing the woman or played any role in the incident. Statements from family members and other people connected to the case may be recorded as part of the investigation.

Dowry-related harassment and deaths continue to remain a serious social and legal concern in India despite strict laws aimed at preventing the practice. Cases involving allegations of cruelty, harassment and violence against married women are investigated under various provisions of criminal law and the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Authorities said further legal action in the Lucknow case will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation. Police have not released additional details about the incident, while the investigation remains underway.

The arrest marks an important development in the case as investigators continue their efforts to establish the sequence of events leading to the woman’s death and determine whether others may also face action in connection with the alleged crime.
