KATHMANDU, (Economy India): Indian spiritual leader Sadhguru Jagadish Vasudev has called for the creation of a five-nation Himalayan Board comprising India, China, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan to strengthen regional cooperation and improve disaster preparedness in the fragile Himalayan region.

Sadhguru made the appeal on Sunday while addressing an event titled “In Solidarity With Nepal” in Kathmandu, where he highlighted the growing need for countries sharing the Himalayan ecosystem to work together in dealing with natural disasters.

The Himalayan region has witnessed increasing concerns over flash floods, landslides, earthquakes and other climate-related disasters, often affecting communities across national borders. Sadhguru said greater cooperation among the countries could help develop a coordinated response mechanism for emergencies in the region.

During the event, he also pledged Rs 1 crore towards Nepal’s Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund, according to an official statement issued by the Isha Foundation.

The appeal comes at a time when Nepal is dealing with the devastating impact of massive flash floods in areas near the China-Nepal border. The disaster has reportedly killed hundreds of people and left thousands missing.

Adding to the concern, a group of 77 pilgrims associated with the Isha Foundation remain missing following the flash floods. Search and rescue operations are continuing in the affected areas as authorities work to locate survivors and provide assistance to displaced families.

Sadhguru’s proposal for a Himalayan Board seeks to bring together the five major countries connected to the Himalayan region for closer coordination on disaster management, environmental protection and emergency response.

The proposed platform could potentially focus on sharing information, improving early-warning systems and strengthening cooperation during major natural disasters affecting the Himalayas, one of the world’s most environmentally sensitive regions.
