Strong growth in import-related tax revenue lifts overall GST mop-up; domestic transactions contribute over ₹1.37 lakh crore
NEW DELHI (Economy India): India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections increased 14.8 per cent year-on-year to nearly ₹2 lakh crore in August, reflecting continued momentum in economic activity and tax collections.
According to the latest data, GST revenue from domestic transactions, including imports, showed strong growth during the month, with import-related collections recording a particularly sharp increase.

Domestic GST Revenue Rises 9.3%
GST revenue from domestic transactions rose 9.3 per cent year-on-year to more than ₹1.37 lakh crore in August.
The increase indicates continued expansion in taxable economic activity across sectors, including consumption, services and business transactions.
Domestic GST collections remain an important indicator of the formalisation of the economy and the government’s ability to mobilise indirect tax revenue.
Imports Drive Stronger Revenue Growth
Revenue collected from imports increased 29 per cent to ₹62,604 crore during August.
The significantly higher growth in import-related GST collections contributed to the overall increase in gross GST revenue. Rising import-related tax receipts can also reflect changes in the value and composition of imports during the period.
Central and State GST Collections
The breakup of gross GST collections showed that Central GST (CGST) stood at ₹38,413 crore, while State GST (SGST) collections amounted to ₹46,316 crore.
Meanwhile, Integrated GST (IGST) collections crossed ₹1.15 lakh crore during August.
IGST is levied on inter-state supplies of goods and services as well as imports, making it a significant component of the overall GST revenue pool.

The August numbers also highlight the growing importance of GST as a key source of indirect tax revenue for India’s public finances.
