NEW DELHI (Economy India): India’s domestic aviation sector witnessed a decline in passenger traffic during April 2026, with airlines carrying just over 1.38 crore passengers, reflecting weaker travel demand and seasonal moderation following a strong March performance.

According to the latest data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), domestic passenger traffic declined by 4.2 per cent on a month-on-month basis and 3.47 per cent year-on-year.

The data highlights emerging challenges for airlines amid changing travel patterns, fluctuating consumer spending and operational pressures across the aviation sector.

Passenger Traffic Drops Below March Levels

DGCA statistics showed that Indian carriers transported more than 1.38 crore passengers during April.

This compares with:

  • 1.44 crore passengers in March 2026
  • 1.43 crore passengers in April 2025

The decline of approximately 6 lakh passengers from March represents a 4.2 per cent sequential drop, while the annual decline stands at 3.47 per cent.

Industry experts attribute the fall partly to softer travel demand after the busy holiday and financial year-end travel season witnessed in March.

The government has also been aggressively promoting regional connectivity through the UDAN scheme, helping bring smaller cities into the aviation ecosystem.
