NEW DELHI (Economy India): Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations on the 10th anniversary of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, calling it a reflection of the collective resolve of 1.4 billion Indians. He appreciated the relentless efforts of those who have contributed to the success of the movement over the past decade, reiterating the government’s commitment to making India a hub for manufacturing and innovation.

Prime Minister’s Message

In his message on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi said: “Today marks the completion of 10 years of ‘Make in India.’ I appreciate all those who have worked tirelessly over the last decade to make this movement successful. ‘Make in India’ represents the collective resolve of 1.4 billion Indians to make our country a center of manufacturing and innovation.”

He further emphasized the significant growth in exports across various sectors under the ‘Make in India’ initiative and its positive impact on the nation’s economy. “It is remarkable that exports have increased across various sectors, capacity has been built, and the economy has strengthened as a result.”

Key Achievements of ‘Make in India’

Over the past ten years, the ‘Make in India’ initiative has driven India’s industrial growth and innovation capacity, with the aim of transforming the country into a global manufacturing hub. Some of the key achievements include:

1. Increase in Exports

The initiative led to substantial growth in exports across several sectors, particularly in manufacturing, technology, and healthcare. For example, India saw a surge in the production and export of mobile phones and electronics.

2. Boost in Domestic Manufacturing

‘Make in India’ helped establish India as a global manufacturing hub by attracting foreign investment. Several multinational companies set up production centers in the country, leading to a significant rise in domestic manufacturing. This also reduced the country’s dependence on imports and enhanced self-reliance.

3. Strengthening the Economy

With increased domestic production and foreign investment, the Indian economy grew stronger, creating a foundation for sustained economic development.

4. Job Creation

The growth in industries and manufacturing under ‘Make in India’ created millions of new employment opportunities, improving livelihoods and boosting the economy, especially in sectors like technology, industry, and services.

5. Technological Development and Innovation

The initiative spurred innovation and technological development in India. There was a massive growth in the IT and startup sectors, transforming India into a global technology hub. Indian companies also began focusing on research and development (R&D) to stay competitive globally.

6. Development of Infrastructure and Manufacturing Hubs

The campaign led to the establishment of new infrastructure projects and manufacturing hubs. For instance, dedicated freight corridors, industrial corridors, and ‘Make in India’ centers played crucial roles in boosting manufacturing.

7. Steps Towards Self-Reliant India

By increasing domestic production and reducing reliance on imports, ‘Make in India’ contributed significantly to the goal of a self-reliant India (‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’). This initiative supported the country’s efforts to become more independent in key sectors.

8. Industrial Reforms and Innovation

Several regulatory reforms were implemented to streamline business and manufacturing processes. This encouraged small and medium-sized enterprises to grow and innovate.

9. Sector-Specific Success

  • Automobile Sector: India emerged as one of the world’s largest automobile producers, with rapid growth in electric vehicle manufacturing.
  • Pharmaceuticals: India solidified its position as the ‘Pharmacy of the World’, with significant growth in production and exports of medicines.
  • Electronics: The country became a key player in mobile phone production, driven largely by ‘Make in India’.

10. Improvement in Global Manufacturing Index

India’s ranking in the global manufacturing index improved significantly, thanks to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. This growth bolstered India’s global competitiveness and solidified its reputation as a major manufacturing destination.

Future Vision and Commitment

Prime Minister Modi reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring the continued success of the initiative: “The Government of India is committed to promoting ‘Make in India’ in every possible way. India’s progress in reforms will continue. Together, we will build a self-reliant and developed India.”
