KATHMANDU/THIMPHU, ( Economy india ): Bhutan recently conducted a full-scale earthquake simulation exercise in its capital, Thimphu, to assess the country’s preparedness for a major seismic disaster. The exercise highlighted gaps in emergency equipment, resource mobilisation, and coordination among response agencies while providing valuable lessons for improving disaster management systems.

The simulation recreated the impact of a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake, causing widespread destruction, mass casualties, damaged buildings, disrupted transportation routes, and power outages. Authorities, hospitals, rescue teams, and emergency responders participated in the drill to test decision-making, communication, rescue operations, and resource deployment during a crisis.

The exercise was designed and facilitated by the National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) with support from the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and Bhutanese authorities. The initiative aimed to strengthen the Thimphu Earthquake Contingency Plan and improve disaster response capabilities.

CDRI, a global coalition launched with the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focuses on building resilient infrastructure and enhancing disaster preparedness across vulnerable regions. The simulation demonstrated the importance of regional cooperation in tackling natural disasters and ensuring faster, more effective emergency responses.

Experts noted that the findings from the exercise will help Bhutan address weaknesses in its disaster management framework and improve readiness for future earthquakes. The results of the simulation were published by a Nepali weekly on Saturday.

The drill also showcased Nepal’s expertise in earthquake preparedness, developed through years of experience dealing with major seismic events. Officials believe such collaborative exercises can play a crucial role in reducing the impact of future disasters across South Asia.
