India to Deploy Advanced Noise-Mitigation System for the First Time on Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor

New Delhi (Economy India): The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) Corridor, India’s first bullet train project, will incorporate an advanced ‘Ventilated Hood’ technology at tunnel entrances and exits to reduce the intense noise generated by trains traveling at very high speeds.

According to officials of the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), a total of 16 ventilated hoods are being constructed at both ends of eight mountain tunnels along the corridor. The technology is being introduced in India for the first time and is designed to minimize the impact of aerodynamic pressure waves and noise produced when bullet trains enter and exit tunnels.

Why Ventilated Hoods Are Needed

Unlike conventional trains, which operate at relatively lower speeds, bullet trains on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route will run at speeds of up to 320 km per hour.

At such high speeds, trains entering a tunnel compress the air inside, creating a pressure wave that travels through the tunnel. When this wave exits the tunnel, it can generate a loud booming sound known as a micro-pressure wave or “tunnel boom.”

The ventilated hood system helps dissipate this pressure gradually, reducing both noise levels and sudden pressure changes.

How the Technology Works

The ventilated hood is a specially designed structure installed at tunnel portals. It features openings that allow air pressure to escape progressively rather than building up inside the tunnel.

Key benefits include:

🚄 Reduction of tunnel boom and noise pollution

🌬️ Better management of aerodynamic pressure waves

🔇 Improved comfort for nearby communities

🛤️ Enhanced operational efficiency of high-speed trains

🏗️ Adoption of globally proven high-speed rail technology

The technology has already been successfully deployed in countries such as Japan, where high-speed rail networks operate through mountainous terrain.

Supporting Sustainable Infrastructure

Officials said the implementation of ventilated hoods reflects India’s commitment to adopting international best practices in railway infrastructure development.

As the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project passes through a mix of urban, rural, and hilly landscapes, minimizing environmental and community impacts remains a priority.

The use of advanced noise-control measures is expected to improve public acceptance of high-speed rail operations while ensuring a better travel experience for passengers.

A Landmark Project for India

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is India’s first bullet train project and is being developed with technical and financial assistance from Japan.

Once operational, the corridor will significantly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad while introducing world-class high-speed rail technology to the country.

The project is expected to enhance connectivity, support economic growth, generate employment opportunities, and strengthen India’s transportation infrastructure.

The adoption of ventilated hood technology marks another important milestone in India’s ambitious bullet train project. By integrating globally proven engineering solutions, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor aims to deliver a faster, safer, and more environmentally responsible transportation system while setting new standards for railway infrastructure in the country.
