World's Longest Dam: Hirakud Dam

SHARESHARESHARESHARE

( Economy India ): The Hirakud Dam, built across the Mahanadi River in Odisha, is known as the world’s longest earthen dam. With a total length of approximately 25.8 kilometers (16 miles), including its dykes, it stands as one of India’s most remarkable engineering achievements. The dam has played a crucial role in flood control, irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, and the overall development of eastern India for several decades.

World’s Longest Dam: Hirakud Dam

Construction of the Hirakud Dam began in 1948, soon after India gained independence. The project was undertaken to control the frequent and destructive floods of the Mahanadi River, which caused heavy damage to lives, crops, and property every year. After nearly nine years of construction, the dam was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on January 13, 1957.

One of the dam’s biggest achievements is the creation of the Hirakud Reservoir, one of the largest man-made lakes in Asia. The reservoir stretches across a vast area and stores enormous quantities of water that are used throughout the year. This water supports irrigation for millions of hectares of farmland, helping farmers grow crops such as rice, wheat, pulses, and vegetables. As a result, the dam has greatly improved agricultural productivity in Odisha and neighboring regions.

Apart from irrigation, the Hirakud Dam is also an important source of hydroelectric power. Its power stations generate clean electricity that supplies homes, industries, and businesses across the state. The availability of reliable electricity has contributed to industrial growth and economic development in the region.

The dam also plays a vital role in flood management. During the monsoon season, it regulates the flow of the Mahanadi River by storing excess water and releasing it in a controlled manner. This helps reduce the risk of severe flooding in downstream districts and protects thousands of villages and towns.

Today, the Hirakud Dam is a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views from the Gandhi Minar and Nehru Minar watchtowers, explore the vast reservoir, and experience the beauty of the surrounding hills and forests. The area is also home to a variety of birds and wildlife, making it a favorite destination for nature lovers and photographers.

More than six decades after its inauguration, the Hirakud Dam continues to serve millions of people by providing water, electricity, flood protection, and employment. It remains a symbol of India’s engineering excellence and a landmark that showcases how large infrastructure projects can transform the economy and improve people’s lives.
