Move Could Increase Pressure on Countries Importing Russian Crude as US Eyes Tougher Energy Sanctions

Washington (Economy India): US President Donald Trump has urged Republican lawmakers to expand the proposed Russia Sanctions Bill by including Iran, signaling a broader push to tighten economic pressure on nations engaged in energy trade with America’s geopolitical rivals.

The proposed legislation, introduced in the US Senate by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, aims to impose 100% punitive tariffs on imports from countries that continue purchasing Russian crude oil. The bill has already secured the backing of more than 60 senators, reflecting strong bipartisan support.

Iran Could Be Added to Sanctions Framework

According to reports from Washington, President Trump has requested Republican lawmakers to amend the legislation to include Iran, potentially expanding the scope of US sanctions beyond Russia.

If approved, the move would further intensify pressure on countries maintaining energy trade with both Russia and Iran, particularly at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions.

India Among Countries Under Watch

The proposed sanctions bill could have implications for major buyers of Russian crude, including India, which has significantly increased imports of discounted Russian oil since 2022.

Other major purchasers include China, making the legislation closely watched by global energy markets and policymakers.

However, the draft legislation currently exempts European nations importing Russian natural gas, a provision that has drawn attention due to its differentiated treatment of energy imports.

What the Bill Proposes

The bipartisan legislation seeks to:

  • Impose 100% tariffs on imports from major buyers of Russian crude oil.
  • Increase economic pressure on Russia over geopolitical conflicts.
  • Discourage continued purchases of Russian energy.
  • Potentially expand sanctions to include Iran if amended.

The proposal is one of the strongest economic measures under consideration in the US Senate against countries continuing energy trade with Russia.

Impact on Global Energy Markets

Analysts say the proposed sanctions could reshape global oil trade if enacted, affecting supply chains, crude pricing, shipping routes, and energy security for importing nations.

India has consistently maintained that its energy procurement decisions are guided by national interests and energy security while complying with international obligations.

The Russia Sanctions Bill is still under legislative consideration in the US Senate, and any expansion to include Iran would require approval through the congressional process.

Global markets are expected to closely monitor the progress of the legislation, as its final form could have significant implications for international trade, energy markets, and diplomatic relations.
