New Delhi (Economy India): Meta has reiterated its commitment to combating child exploitation across its digital platforms after the Government of India issued a notice to the social media company over reports that certain Instagram advertisements promoted content violating child safety standards.
In a detailed blog post published on Tuesday, the company described child exploitation as a “horrific crime” and outlined the measures it has implemented to detect, prevent, and remove child sexual abuse material (CSAM) across its services.
Meta Responds to Government Notice
The company’s response comes after Indian authorities sought an explanation regarding reports that some Instagram advertisements had promoted content that violated the platform’s policies on child exploitation.
Addressing the issue, Meta said:
“We’re aware of recent news reports about Instagram ads in India that violated our policies against child exploitation. We take these concerns seriously, we never want this content on our platforms, and we’re committed to improving our efforts to combat it.”
The company added that it works every day to combat child exploitation both on and off its platforms.
Measures Announced by Meta
According to the blog, Meta said it has strengthened its child safety framework through multiple layers of technology and human review, including:
- Artificial intelligence (AI)-based detection systems.
- Advertisement review mechanisms designed to identify policy violations.
- Enhanced content moderation and enforcement actions.
- Removal of accounts and content found to violate child safety policies.
- Collaboration with law enforcement agencies and child protection organizations.
- Continuous improvements to automated detection tools.
The company said these measures are intended to identify abusive content at an early stage and prevent it from spreading across its platforms.
Child Safety Remains a Global Priority
Meta emphasized that protecting children online remains one of its highest priorities. The company noted that it continues to invest in advanced technologies, specialized safety teams, and partnerships with global organizations dedicated to preventing online child exploitation.
It also stated that it regularly updates its enforcement mechanisms to respond to evolving threats and improve the effectiveness of its safety systems.
Regulatory Scrutiny of Digital Platforms
The development reflects increasing regulatory scrutiny of major social media platforms worldwide regarding user safety, content moderation, and advertising practices.
Governments across several jurisdictions have called on technology companies to strengthen safeguards against illegal and harmful content, particularly material involving the exploitation of children.
Looking Ahead
Meta said it remains committed to working with governments, law enforcement agencies, and child safety experts to strengthen online protections and improve its systems for detecting and removing prohibited content.
The Government of India has not yet publicly announced any further action following the issuance of the notice.
