Maharashtra Politics at a Crossroads: Speculation Grows Over Deputy CM Succession, NCP Merger Talks After Ajit Pawar Tragedy

Mumbai (Economy India): Maharashtra’s political landscape is witnessing intense churn amid mounting speculation over the future leadership of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the vacant Deputy Chief Minister’s post, following the sudden and tragic developments involving senior NCP leader and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, according to political sources and party insiders.

While official confirmation on several aspects is still awaited, multiple political developments unfolding simultaneously — from high-level meetings in Mumbai to renewed talks on a possible NCP reunification — indicate that the state’s power equations may be on the brink of a significant realignment.

Deputy CM Post Vacant, Succession Talks Intensify

Sources within the ruling Mahayuti alliance indicate that the Deputy Chief Minister’s post, held by Ajit Pawar along with key portfolios such as Finance, Excise and Sports, is currently vacant, triggering consultations at the highest political levels.

According to NCP insiders, Sunetra Pawar, Ajit Pawar’s wife, has emerged as a potential name under consideration for the Deputy CM position. If formalised, she would become Maharashtra’s first woman Deputy Chief Minister, a development that could carry both symbolic and strategic significance for the party and the ruling alliance.

Party sources said an NCP Legislature Party and Legislative Council meeting is expected to be held in Mumbai, after which an official announcement may be made. Speculation is rife that a swearing-in ceremony could take place later in the evening, subject to political consensus.

High-Level Meetings with CM Fadnavis

Political activity accelerated on Friday as senior NCP leaders — including Praful Patel, Chhagan Bhujbal and Sunil Tatkare — met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at his official residence, Varsha Bungalow.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, the talks focused on:

  • Continuity of governance
  • The Deputy CM post
  • Redistribution of key ministerial portfolios
  • Political stability ahead of the state budget

The meeting reportedly lasted around 30 minutes. Later in the day, CM Fadnavis stated that decisions related to NCP leadership and representation would be taken by the party itself, adding that the government stands firmly with the Pawar family and the NCP during this period.

Finance Ministry Likely to Remain with CM

One of the most closely watched aspects is the Finance Ministry, a crucial portfolio particularly with the Maharashtra budget due in March.

Political sources suggest that:

  • The Finance Department may temporarily remain with CM Devendra Fadnavis
  • The Chief Minister himself is likely to present the state budget

This would not be unprecedented. During the previous Mahayuti government under Eknath Shinde, Fadnavis held both the Home and Finance portfolios and presented the state budget in March 2023.

Ajit Pawar was scheduled to present the budget later this year after taking charge of the finance portfolio in July 2023.

Strategic Consultations in Baramati

Adding to the political buzz, Sunetra Pawar reportedly held discussions in Baramati with Naresh Arora, a well-known political strategist who has worked closely with Ajit Pawar and the NCP through his organisation Designbox.

Sources claim that the consultation focused on:

  • Political continuity
  • Party strategy amid uncertainty
  • Managing organisational cohesion

Later in the evening, reports emerged suggesting that Sunetra Pawar had conveyed her willingness to take on a larger political role, though no official confirmation has been issued so far.

Renewed Focus on NCP Merger Talks

Parallel to succession discussions, the long-running talks on a possible merger between the two NCP factions — the Ajit Pawar-led NCP and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) — have returned to the spotlight.

Several leaders from both sides have publicly indicated that merger talks were at an advanced stage before recent events.

What Leaders Are Saying

  • Kiran Gujar, a close associate of Ajit Pawar, told PTI that efforts to reunify the party were “100% sincere” and that a roadmap for a united NCP had already been prepared.
  • Senior NCP leader Jayant Patil confirmed that multiple meetings had taken place and that Ajit Pawar was positive about reunification, with a final decision expected after local body elections.
  • NCP (SP) leader Eknath Khadse told ANI that a merger was “decided in principle”.

What a Merger Could Mean Politically

According to sources, the merger discussions had reached an advanced stage before being put on hold. If the reunification goes through:

  • A united NCP could command 9 Lok Sabha MPs and 51 MLAs
  • The balance of power within the Mahayuti alliance or the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) could shift significantly
  • NCP (SP) leaders may gain key roles in governance and party organisation

Analysts view the merger as a strategic move to reclaim political dominance in western Maharashtra’s sugar belt, where the BJP has made recent inroads in municipal and cooperative elections.

Economic and Governance Implications

Beyond politics, these developments carry important economic and administrative implications for Maharashtra:

  • Budget preparation amid leadership transition
  • Continuity of fiscal policy
  • Investor sentiment and policy stability
  • Implementation of welfare and infrastructure programs

With Maharashtra being India’s largest state economy, political stability remains a key concern for markets and businesses alike.

Background: The NCP Split

The Nationalist Congress Party, founded by Sharad Pawar in 1999, split in July 2023 when Ajit Pawar joined the BJP-Shiv Sena-led Mahayuti government. This led to a bitter legal and political battle over the party name and symbol, both of which were eventually awarded to the Ajit Pawar faction.

Currently:

  • The Ajit Pawar-led NCP is part of the ruling Mahayuti government
  • The NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) remains with the opposition MVA

The Road Ahead

As Maharashtra navigates this sensitive political moment, clarity is expected in the coming days on:

  • The Deputy Chief Minister’s appointment
  • Ministerial portfolio allocation
  • The future of NCP reunification talks

Until official announcements are made, political circles in Mumbai and Baramati remain on edge, watching closely as events unfold that could reshape Maharashtra’s political and economic trajectory.
