Suman Bery asserts India’s growth model is scalable, inclusive, and ready to support Global South through innovation and multilateral cooperation

New York (Economy India): India’s consistent and inclusive economic growth has positioned it as a pillar of global stability and a model for developing economies, said Suman Bery, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, during a ministerial session of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development at the United Nations headquarters.
In a powerful address, Bery stated, “The world needs new engines of growth and development models that are scalable and shareable. India, with its unique strengths and proven experiences, is ready and willing to provide all three.”
Amid a backdrop of global economic uncertainty and transformation, Bery emphasized that India’s developmental trajectory offers both inspiration and proof of what is possible. He described India as an emerging vibrant democracy whose social and economic indicators continue to improve, backed by structural reforms, digital inclusion, and empowerment across societal segments.

A Model for the Global South
Highlighting India’s commitment to the Global South, Bery remarked that India stands as a credible and exemplary path for other developing nations. “India’s journey, marked by scale, speed, and sustainability, provides a reliable development model that others can adapt,” he said.
The term “Global South” refers to countries in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania that are economically less developed. Bery reiterated India’s role in fostering transformation in this group through inclusive growth, technology support, concessional financing, and capacity building.

Lifting Millions Out of Poverty
Bery cited data showing that nearly 248 million Indians were lifted out of poverty between 2013-14 and 2022-23. He credited this transformation to targeted government schemes, grassroots empowerment, and technological penetration in rural areas.

“India today is home to one of the world’s largest pools of emerging professionals and young talent. Our commitment is to ensure their future is secure, innovative, and prosperous,” Bery added.

UN Role Still Crucial
Reaffirming India’s commitment to multilateralism, Bery said, “India continues to believe in the United Nations as the foundation of global cooperation. We support a more representative and effective UN system that reflects modern realities.”
India also called for greater focus on inclusive and sustainable development by the UN and stressed the importance of enabling all countries to play a role in shaping shared futures.
Global Challenges Ahead
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, addressing the same forum, painted a stark picture of current global conditions—rising military expenditure, shrinking aid budgets, trade tensions, and widening inequalities. He warned that these trends risk undermining efforts toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“Mistrust, division, and direct conflict are exerting enormous pressure on the international problem-solving system,” Guterres said. “But we must not give up. The SDGs are still within reach if we act with urgency and ambition.”

India’s Action on Sustainability
India has been actively contributing to global sustainability through support for solar energy infrastructure, digital governance tools, and South-South cooperation frameworks. Bery underlined that India’s progress shows that inclusion

and sustainability are not just possible—they are scalable.
He concluded with a call to global partners: “Let us work together to ensure that the next decade is not only about recovery, but about transforming development systems for long-term peace, prosperity, and equity.”
