EconomyIndia: Monkeypox is a rare viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus. The disease was first identified in 1958 when outbreaks were observed in monkeys kept for research, which is why it was named “monkeypox.” However, the virus primarily spreads from small mammals in Africa, such as rodents, squirrels, and other small animals. The first human case of monkeypox was reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970.
Symptoms: Monkeypox symptoms typically appear 7-14 days after infection, though the incubation period can range from 5 to 21 days. The symptoms are similar to those of the flu and include:
- Fever: Sudden onset of high fever.
- Headache: Severe headache.
- Fatigue: Extreme tiredness.
- Muscle Pain: Pain in muscles and joints.
- Swollen Lymph Nodes: Swelling in the lymph nodes, particularly in the neck, armpits, and groin.
- Rashes and Lesions: 1 to 3 days after the onset of fever, small blisters and rashes begin to appear on the body, starting from the face and spreading to the rest of the body.
Transmission: The monkeypox virus can spread through contact with an infected animal or close contact with an infected person. The virus can be transmitted through bodily fluids, contact with sores, or through contaminated clothing and bedding used by an infected individual.
Treatment and Prevention: There is no specific treatment for monkeypox, but medications can be provided to manage the symptoms. Additionally, the smallpox vaccine offers some protection against monkeypox.
Preventive Measures:
- Maintain distance from infected individuals.
- Avoid contact with clothing and bedding used by an infected person.
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Avoid traveling to areas where the infection is prevalent.
Current Situation: In recent years, several cases of monkeypox have been reported outside of Africa, including in Europe and the United States. The spread is attributed to international travel and the importation of infected animals. Many countries are taking precautions to prevent the spread of the virus, and awareness efforts are being increased.
Given the rising number of monkeypox cases, health organizations and governments are on high alert and are taking necessary steps to contain the virus. If someone exhibits symptoms of monkeypox, they should immediately consult a doctor and take appropriate precautions.
