Night Owls May Have More Belly Fat

SHARESHARESHARESHARE

( Economy India ): People who prefer staying awake late at night may face a greater risk of developing belly fat, higher blood sugar levels, and unhealthy cholesterol, according to a new study.

Researchers found that “night owls” often eat meals and snacks later in the evening, choosing foods that are high in calories, carbohydrates, and fats. While the total amount of food consumed throughout the day was similar to those who wake up early, the timing of eating played a major role in overall health.

The study highlights that a person’s chronotype—whether they are naturally a morning person or an evening person—can influence eating habits, metabolism, and food preferences.

According to lead researcher Rozanne Kruger from Griffith University, both morning and evening types consumed nearly the same amount of energy each day. However, late-night eating was associated with higher body fat percentage, increased abdominal fat, elevated blood sugar, and poorer lipid profiles.

Health experts suggest that maintaining regular meal times, avoiding heavy late-night meals, and following a balanced diet may help reduce the risk of obesity and metabolic disorders, especially for people with evening lifestyles.
