BRISBANE, (Economy India): Recent reports of three toddler deaths in Queensland linked to very low iron levels have understandably raised concerns among parents about whether their children are getting enough iron.
The good news is that life-threatening iron deficiency is uncommon. However, iron deficiency remains one of the most common nutritional deficiencies among young children and can affect their growth, development and overall wellbeing.
Why Is Iron Important for Toddlers?
Iron is essential for producing haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Young children need adequate iron because their bodies and brains are developing rapidly.
A lack of iron can lead to iron-deficiency anaemia. Children with low iron may become tired, pale or less active. In some cases, they may also experience poor concentration, irritability or developmental problems.
How Can Parents Help?
Parents can support their toddler’s iron intake by offering a variety of iron-rich foods. Meat, poultry and fish are good sources of iron. Plant-based sources include beans, lentils, tofu, eggs and iron-fortified cereals.
Combining plant-based iron sources with foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges, strawberries, tomatoes and capsicum, can also help the body absorb iron more effectively.
When Should Parents Seek Medical Advice?
Parents should speak with a doctor or qualified health professional if they are concerned about their child’s diet, growth or symptoms that could indicate iron deficiency.
Iron supplements should not be given to young children without medical advice, as excessive iron can also be dangerous.
For most toddlers, a varied and balanced diet can provide the iron they need. Understanding the signs of deficiency and seeking professional advice when concerns arise can help parents protect their child’s health and development.
