Johannesburg, South Africa (Economy India): Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming the key competitive differentiator in the global financial services industry, according to Huawei executives speaking at the South Africa Financial Services Industry Summit, held as part of Huawei South Africa Connect 2026.

The summit brought together banking, insurance, and technology leaders to discuss how AI is reshaping financial institutions, improving operational efficiency, and creating new opportunities for customer engagement.

AI Driving the Next Generation of Banking

Addressing the summit, Jason Cao, CEO of Huawei Digital Finance Business Unit, said the banking industry is entering a new era where success will increasingly depend on how effectively organizations apply AI to generate measurable business value.

According to Cao, AI is no longer just a technology initiative but a strategic business capability that can enhance productivity, improve decision-making, and transform customer experiences across banking and insurance.

“As open-source models cross the trillion-parameter threshold, AI is evolving from open architecture to open compute. In an era where compute is productivity, competition in banking has shifted to token efficiency and real-world value creation,” Jason Cao said.

He added that trillion-parameter AI models, such as Kimi K3, demonstrate that open-source AI has become mainstream for financial institutions.

Open-Source AI Gains Momentum

Huawei believes the rapid advancement of open-source large language models is changing how banks deploy AI solutions.

Unlike earlier AI systems that required proprietary platforms, modern open-source models provide greater flexibility, scalability, and innovation while reducing development costs.

Industry experts note that banks worldwide are increasingly deploying AI for:

  • Fraud detection
  • Risk assessment
  • Customer service automation
  • Personalized financial advice
  • Credit underwriting
  • Compliance monitoring
  • Intelligent document processing

Hybrid AI Architecture for Financial Institutions

Huawei also showcased its Hybrid AI Architecture, designed to help financial institutions leverage large-scale computing power while maintaining security, compliance, and operational efficiency.

According to the company, the architecture enables banks and insurers to optimize AI workloads so that every AI-generated output contributes meaningful business value.

Huawei said the approach supports institutions in balancing private infrastructure with cloud-based AI capabilities, enabling faster innovation while protecting sensitive financial data.

AI Reshaping the Financial Services Industry

Global financial institutions are investing billions of dollars in AI technologies as they seek to improve customer experiences, reduce operational costs, strengthen cybersecurity, and accelerate digital transformation.

From intelligent chatbots and automated claims processing to predictive analytics and real-time fraud prevention, AI is becoming central to the future of banking and insurance.

Industry analysts believe institutions that successfully integrate AI into core business processes will gain a significant competitive advantage in the coming years.

Looking Ahead

As AI models continue to evolve and computing capabilities expand, technology companies such as Huawei expect financial institutions to increasingly focus on generating measurable business outcomes rather than simply adopting AI technologies.

The discussions at Huawei South Africa Connect 2026 underscore a broader industry trend: the future of banking will be defined not only by digital transformation but also by how effectively organizations harness artificial intelligence to deliver value, improve efficiency, and enhance customer trust.
