Blue Colts secure historic qualification for China 2027 after finishing among the best runners-up in the qualifiers
TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (Economy India): India secured a historic return to the AFC U20 Asian Cup after a gap of 20 years, defeating Bangladesh 3-0 in their final Group B qualifying match in Tashkent on Sunday.
The emphatic victory took India to six points from three matches. Their qualification was subsequently confirmed after Syria lost 0-3 to hosts Uzbekistan, allowing India to finish second in Group B and qualify as one of the seven best runners-up from the eight qualifying groups.
India last featured in the AFC U20 Asian Cup main tournament in 2006, when the country hosted the competition.
Comfortable Victory Over Bangladesh
India dominated Bangladesh in their final qualifying fixture, with Danny Meitei Laishram, Vishal Yadav and substitute Md Arbash finding the net.
Danny opened the scoring in the 25th minute before Vishal doubled India’s advantage with an acrobatic finish in the 60th minute.
Substitute Md Arbash then completed the victory in the 79th minute with a powerful strike.
The victory marked India’s second win of the qualifying campaign.
Strong Start Helped India Stay in Contention
India had begun their Group B campaign with a narrow but important 1-0 victory over Syria, with Shami Singamayum scoring the decisive goal in the 86th minute.
However, India suffered a 0-4 defeat against hosts Uzbekistan in their second match, leaving their qualification hopes dependent on their final game and results elsewhere.
The Blue Colts responded in emphatic fashion against Bangladesh.
Qualification Confirmed After Syria-Uzbekistan Result
With India finishing their campaign on six points, the team had to wait for the result of the Syria-Uzbekistan match.
Syria needed a favourable result to keep India from advancing, but Uzbekistan recorded a 3-0 victory over Syria.
That result confirmed India’s second-place finish in Group B and secured their return to the AFC U20 Asian Cup after two decades.
India Return to Asia’s Top U20 Competition
India’s qualification is significant for the country’s youth football programme.
The Blue Colts had narrowly missed qualification for the previous edition in 2025 on goal difference. This time, they successfully navigated a difficult group containing hosts Uzbekistan, Syria and Bangladesh.
The AFC qualification format provided places for the eight group winners and the seven best runners-up to join hosts China in the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup.
A Historic Moment for the Blue Colts
India’s return to the continental tournament ends a long wait for the country’s U20 side.
The team’s performance in Tashkent also provides valuable experience to a group of young players competing at international level.
For head coach Mahesh Gawali and his squad, the qualification represents an important milestone and an opportunity to compete against Asia’s strongest youth teams.
India’s best-ever performance in the competition came in 1974, when the country shared the title with Iran.
What Lies Ahead
The AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 will provide India with an opportunity to test its young footballers against the continent’s leading teams.
For Indian football, the focus will now shift from qualification to preparation.
The experience gained by the Blue Colts in Uzbekistan—including the hard-fought win over Syria, the difficult defeat against Uzbekistan and the decisive victory over Bangladesh—could prove valuable as India prepares for the continental tournament.
After 20 years, India’s Blue Colts are back on Asia’s biggest U20 football stage.
