WASHINGTON, (Economy india):China is further tightening its political control over Tibet while reducing the participation of Tibetans in key decision-making positions, according to a new report by the US-based International Campaign for Tibet (ICT).

The advocacy group has called for stronger international backing for the Tibetan government-in-exile, formally known as the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), which is based in Dharamshala, India.

The ICT on Tuesday urged the US Congress to restore full funding for humanitarian assistance and other support for Tibetan communities in India and Nepal. It also called for increased funding for capacity-building programmes within the CTA.

The report comes amid concerns over China’s growing influence over Tibet’s political, cultural and administrative institutions. The ICT said stronger international support is needed to help Tibetan communities preserve their identity and strengthen their institutions.

The CTA functions as the Tibetan government-in-exile and represents Tibetans living across the world. Based in Dharamshala, it provides services including education, healthcare and cultural preservation for the Tibetan diaspora.

The 14th Dalai Lama continues to serve as the spiritual leader of Tibetans, while the Sikyong, or president, serves as the political head of the CTA.

The advocacy group said continued international engagement and assistance would be important for supporting Tibetan communities and strengthening the capacity of the CTA.
