WASHINGTON, (Economy india): SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk has highlighted the potential of Starlink satellite internet services to improve connectivity in some of the least-served parts of India, particularly rural and remote areas.

Musk made the remarks in a social media post on Thursday, responding to a post by X account DogeDesigner that called for Starlink Services to be made available in India to help connect remote villages.

“Starlink would help the least served in India, especially in rural areas,” Musk said.

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, uses a network of satellites in low Earth orbit to provide high-speed internet connectivity without relying entirely on traditional terrestrial infrastructure. The technology is seen as particularly useful in areas where laying fibre-optic cables or establishing conventional broadband networks can be difficult or expensive.

India has a large rural population spread across geographically diverse regions, including remote villages, mountainous areas and locations with limited digital infrastructure. Satellite-based internet services could potentially help bridge some of these connectivity gaps and provide access to online education, digital payments, telemedicine, government services and other internet-based facilities.

Musk’s comments come as satellite internet services attract growing attention in India. Companies seeking to provide such services need to comply with the country’s regulatory and licensing requirements before launching commercial operations.

The expansion of reliable internet access in underserved regions could support greater digital inclusion and help rural communities participate more actively in India’s growing digital economy. However, affordability, network coverage, regulatory approvals and the cost of user equipment will remain important factors in determining how widely satellite internet can be adopted.

Musk’s latest remarks therefore underline Starlink’s potential role in addressing connectivity challenges in parts of India where conventional broadband infrastructure remains limited.
