New Delhi (Economy India): A group of environmental experts has expressed concerns over the proposed Sijimali Bauxite Mining Project in Odisha, stating that the project could have significant ecological and social consequences. In an open letter addressed to various government authorities, the experts urged a comprehensive review of the proposal before any further approvals are granted.
The proposed mining project is being developed by Vedanta, one of India’s leading natural resources companies. According to the experts, the project has the potential to affect biodiversity, wildlife habitats, forest ecosystems, and the livelihoods of communities dependent on these forests.

Concerns Over Ecological Impact
In their communication, the experts highlighted several environmental risks associated with the proposed mining activity, including:
- Potential loss of biodiversity in ecologically sensitive areas.
- Disturbance to wildlife habitats and migration corridors.
- Degradation of forest ecosystems.
- Impact on water resources and local ecology.
- Possible effects on the livelihoods of forest-dependent communities.
They emphasized that the Sijimali region is ecologically significant and requires careful environmental assessment before any large-scale mining operations begin.
Call for Comprehensive Environmental Review
The experts have urged the concerned authorities to undertake a detailed scientific evaluation of the project’s environmental and social impacts. They have also called for ensuring that statutory environmental safeguards, forest conservation norms, and public consultation processes are followed in accordance with applicable laws.
The open letter stresses the importance of balancing India’s developmental and mineral resource requirements with long-term environmental sustainability and community welfare.

Mining and Sustainable Development
Bauxite is a critical raw material for aluminium production, making it strategically important for sectors such as infrastructure, transportation, renewable energy, defence, and manufacturing. At the same time, mining projects often require careful assessment to minimize ecological disruption and ensure sustainable resource development.
Environmental clearances for major mining projects typically involve multiple stages of evaluation, including environmental impact assessments (EIA), forest clearances, and consultations with local stakeholders.
No Official Response Yet
As of now, there has been no official response from Vedanta or the concerned government authorities regarding the concerns raised in the open letter. Any future decisions on the project are expected to follow the applicable regulatory and environmental approval processes.
Economy India will continue to monitor developments related to the Sijimali Bauxite Mining Project and provide updates as more information becomes available.
