Chandigarh (Economy India): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday positioned the state as a promising investment destination for British companies, calling for stronger and broader economic engagement with the United Kingdom, particularly in unexplored and emerging business domains.

Push for Diversified India–UK Economic Cooperation

Addressing the gathering, Mann said Punjab is keen to deepen its partnership with the UK beyond traditional sectors, and is actively seeking collaboration in new-age industries.

“Punjab is ready to expand cooperation with the United Kingdom in both established and emerging sectors, offering a conducive environment for investment and innovation,”
the Chief Minister said.

He underlined that Punjab’s economic strategy is focused on diversification, industrial modernisation, and employment generation, making global partnerships increasingly important.

Meeting with UK Diplomats and Industry Representatives

The strategic dialogue was attended by British Deputy High Commissioner Alba Smeriglio, along with representatives from:

  • UK-linked companies
  • Multinational corporations
  • Business and investment stakeholders

The interaction provided an opportunity to discuss investment opportunities, regulatory facilitation, and sector-specific collaboration between Punjab and UK enterprises.

Punjab’s Investment Proposition

During the discussions, the state government highlighted Punjab’s strengths, including:

  • Strategic location with strong connectivity
  • Robust agricultural base with scope for value addition
  • Growing focus on industrial parks and logistics
  • Skilled and semi-skilled workforce
  • Supportive policy framework for investors

The Chief Minister emphasized that Punjab is actively working to improve the ease of doing business, with streamlined approvals and investor-friendly governance.

Focus on Emerging Sectors

Officials indicated that Punjab is particularly interested in UK partnerships in areas such as:

  • Advanced manufacturing
  • Agro-processing and food technology
  • Renewable energy and sustainability
  • Education and skill development
  • Healthcare and life sciences

These sectors are aligned with the state’s broader development priorities and global market trends.

UK as a Strategic Partner

The United Kingdom has traditionally been an important partner for India in trade, education, and technology. Punjab’s outreach reflects a state-level effort to leverage UK expertise and investment to support local economic growth.

The dialogue also aligns with broader India–UK economic engagement, including ongoing discussions around trade facilitation and business cooperation.

Strengthening Institutional Engagement

The Punjab–UK Engagement Strategic Dialogue is expected to serve as a continuing platform for:

  • Identifying investment opportunities
  • Resolving operational challenges
  • Facilitating government-to-business interactions
  • Building long-term institutional partnerships

Officials noted that sustained engagement would be key to translating discussions into concrete investment outcomes.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s pitch underscores Punjab’s ambition to position itself as a competitive and forward-looking investment hub for global partners, particularly from the UK. By focusing on both traditional strengths and emerging sectors, the state aims to attract diversified investments that can drive sustainable growth and job creation.
