Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister says reforms and farmer-focused policies have transformed India’s agriculture sector over the past decade.

Gorakhpur (Economy India): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday claimed that lakhs of farmers across the country died by suicide between 2005 and 2014, while asserting that the situation has significantly improved during the last 12 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Addressing the inaugural session of the Joint Kharif Productivity Seminar-2026 for the Gorakhpur, Basti, and Azamgarh divisions, Adityanath said that substantial changes in the agriculture sector have empowered farmers, strengthened rural economies, and enabled greater self-reliance.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said that the period between 2005 and 2014 witnessed widespread distress among farmers, leading to a large number of suicides across the country.

“If we look at the period from 2005 to 2014, lakhs of farmers committed suicide across the country. There was a tragedy behind these incidents,” Adityanath said.

The Chief Minister emphasized that agricultural reforms, increased government support, improved infrastructure, and welfare initiatives introduced over the past decade have helped improve conditions for farmers.

According to Adityanath, the government’s focus on irrigation projects, crop procurement, rural infrastructure, agricultural technology, and direct financial assistance has contributed to strengthening the agricultural sector and improving farmers’ livelihoods.

He also highlighted the role of farmers in driving economic growth and ensuring food security, stating that agriculture remains a vital pillar of India’s development journey.

The remarks came during discussions focused on improving Kharif crop productivity and promoting modern agricultural practices across eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Focus on Agricultural Growth

The Kharif Productivity Seminar aims to encourage higher agricultural output through improved farming techniques, better seed varieties, efficient water management, and increased awareness among farmers regarding government schemes and technological innovations.

Officials and agricultural experts participating in the seminar discussed strategies to enhance crop yields, improve sustainability, and support farmers in adapting to changing climatic conditions.
