Nations Aim to Boost Cross-Border Payments, Investment, and Professional Mobility
New Delhi (Economy India): India and Spain have agreed to fast-track discussions on enabling interoperability between India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Spain’s Bizum digital payments platform, marking a significant step toward strengthening digital financial connectivity and economic cooperation between the two countries.
The announcement was made following Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s recent visit to Spain, where both sides held high-level discussions on trade, investment, technology, and financial collaboration.
UPI-Bizum Integration on Fast Track
The proposed interoperability between UPI, India’s world-leading real-time digital payment system, and Bizum, Spain’s widely used instant payment platform, is expected to make cross-border digital transactions faster, more secure, and more convenient for businesses, tourists, students, and professionals.
If implemented, the initiative would further expand UPI’s growing international footprint and strengthen India’s position as a global leader in digital payments.
Focus on Investment and Trade
Beyond digital payments, India and Spain discussed measures to deepen economic cooperation through:
- Strengthening bilateral investment facilitation.
- Improving mobility for professionals and skilled workers.
- Promoting joint investments in third-country markets.
- Expanding trade and business partnerships.
- Enhancing technology and innovation collaboration.
Officials also explored ways to encourage greater participation of businesses from both countries in infrastructure, manufacturing, renewable energy, and digital economy projects.
Spain as a Strategic Gateway
During the discussions, Spain highlighted its strategic importance as India’s gateway to both Europe and Latin America.
The two countries agreed to leverage Spain’s geographic and economic position to facilitate Indian investments and business expansion into European and Latin American markets while encouraging Spanish companies to explore opportunities in India’s rapidly growing economy.
Expanding India’s Global Digital Ecosystem
India has been actively promoting international adoption of UPI through partnerships with multiple countries.
The integration with Bizum would support:
- Seamless cross-border payments.
- Easier remittances.
- Tourism and business travel.
- Digital commerce.
- Financial inclusion.
The move also aligns with India’s broader vision of exporting its Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) model to global partners.
The proposed UPI-Bizum interoperability represents another milestone in India’s expanding digital diplomacy and fintech leadership. As bilateral economic relations continue to strengthen, closer cooperation in digital payments, trade, investment, and technology is expected to unlock new opportunities for businesses and consumers in both countries.
