EDINBURGH (UK), (Economy India): As the war in Ukraine approaches its four-and-a-half-year mark, growing concerns are emerging in Europe over whether public and political support for Kyiv can be sustained for much longer.
Recent YouGov data from February 2026 indicates significant differences among European countries over how the conflict should proceed. In France, Germany and Spain, support for pursuing a negotiated peace has overtaken support for continuing the war until Russia withdraws from Ukrainian territory.
The issue is also becoming increasingly important in Italy, where Ukraine policy is expected to feature prominently ahead of the 2027 elections. While major political parties, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy and the centre-left Democratic Party, continue to support Ukraine, some smaller parties have shown less enthusiasm for maintaining military assistance.
The Five Star Movement and Lega Nord are among the political forces where support for continued military aid to Ukraine appears weaker. Such differences highlight the growing political challenge facing European governments as the conflict continues.
However, Ukraine’s recent battlefield momentum could provide Kyiv with additional time and potentially strengthen its position in negotiations. Any improvement on the battlefield could also influence public perceptions about the war and encourage European governments to maintain their support.
At the same time, prolonged fighting, rising economic pressures and domestic political concerns could make it increasingly difficult for European leaders to maintain the same level of commitment. The balance between supporting Ukraine militarily and responding to growing calls for diplomacy is therefore likely to remain a major issue across Europe.
For Ukraine, maintaining European backing will be crucial as the war enters another prolonged phase. For European governments, the challenge will be to balance security concerns, public opinion and political pressures while deciding how long and how strongly to continue supporting Kyiv.
