NEW DELHI | Economy India: Leaders of the BRICS countries have recognised artificial intelligence (AI) as a major opportunity to accelerate economic growth and support sustainable development across nations.
The recognition was made in the New Delhi Declaration 2026, adopted by BRICS leaders on Saturday. The declaration highlighted the importance of international cooperation to improve access to AI resources while ensuring that the technology remains safe, secure, inclusive and reliable.
The leaders stressed that greater cooperation in AI would be particularly important for developing economies and countries of the Global South, helping create a more just, fair, equitable and prosperous future.

BRICS Calls for Fair AI Ecosystem
The declaration also underlined the importance of respecting intellectual property rights in the digital environment, including rights associated with content and material used for AI training.
“We recognise the importance of collaborating on promoting respect for the intellectual property rights used in the digital environment, including for artificial intelligence training purposes, as well as fair remuneration to right holders,” the leaders said.
The statement signals growing recognition among BRICS nations that AI development needs to balance innovation and economic opportunity with intellectual property protection and fair compensation.
AI and the Global South
For BRICS economies, AI is increasingly being viewed as a tool that can improve productivity, strengthen digital infrastructure, support innovation and create new economic opportunities. At the same time, leaders stressed that access to AI resources should not remain concentrated among a limited number of countries or companies.
The emphasis on accessibility, inclusiveness and reliability reflects the broader objective of ensuring that developing economies can participate meaningfully in the emerging AI-driven global economy.
The declaration therefore places international cooperation at the centre of efforts to harness AI for sustainable and inclusive growth.
