Ford Signs Letter of Intent with Tamil Nadu Government for Global Export Production

CHENNNAI (Economy India): Ford Motor Company is making a comeback to India’s manufacturing sector, but with a focus solely on global exports. The company has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Tamil Nadu government to restart production at its Chennai plant. Despite resuming manufacturing, Ford will not be selling its vehicles in the Indian market.

Resumption of Manufacturing Operations

Ford ceased its manufacturing operations in India approximately three years ago. Now, the American automaker has decided to restart production at its Chennai facility. This move is part of Ford’s Ford+ Growth Plan, aimed at boosting its global export capabilities.

Statement from Ford

Kay Hart, President of Ford International Markets Group, expressed gratitude for the support received from the Tamil Nadu government. Hart stated, “We are grateful for the assistance from the Tamil Nadu government as we explore various options for the Chennai plant.”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Response

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin welcomed Ford’s decision to return. He signed the LOI alongside Hart and tweeted, “We have considered the value of rekindling Ford’s long-standing partnership with Tamil Nadu.”

Employment Opportunities

Currently, Ford employs around 12,000 people in Tamil Nadu for its global operations. The company anticipates creating an additional 2,500 to 3,000 jobs over the next three years. Including its engine manufacturing operations in Sanand, India remains Ford’s second-largest salaried workforce country.

Customer Support Continuity

Although Ford is not reintroducing its vehicles to the Indian market, it continues to support its existing customer base of over 1 million in India. The company maintains operations for car servicing, parts supply, and warranty services for its old customers.

Ford’s return to India highlights its strategy to enhance global production while maintaining support for its established customer base in India.
