KOCHI (KERALA) [INDIA], (Economy India): In a major boost to India’s indigenous marine manufacturing sector, Kochi-based watercraft specialist MKEL Marine has unveiled five new lines of indigenously designed and manufactured watercraft.
The initiative aims to reduce India’s dependence on imported high-end boats while helping position Kerala as a major hub for high-performance boating, marine technology and composite engineering.
The new range was launched on Saturday by renowned circumnavigator Commander Abhilash Tomy, KC, NM (Retd), the first Indian to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world.
MKEL Marine said the watercraft have been designed, engineered and manufactured at the company’s facility in Njarakkal, Kochi, following international standards. The company plans to target both the growing domestic market and international customers.
The launch includes five distinct watercraft lines developed to meet different requirements in the marine sector. The company believes that locally manufactured, high-quality boats can provide Indian customers with advanced alternatives to expensive imported watercraft.
The development comes at a time when the Make in India initiative is encouraging greater domestic manufacturing across sectors, including specialised engineering and marine technology. India’s long coastline and expanding maritime economy offer significant opportunities for companies involved in boat building and advanced marine products.
By developing high-performance watercraft within India, MKEL Marine aims to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities, support skilled employment and create opportunities for exports.
The company is also looking to establish a stronger presence in global markets, showcasing Indian engineering and composite manufacturing capabilities to international buyers.
The launch of the five indigenous watercraft lines marks an important step for Kerala’s marine manufacturing ecosystem and could help Kochi emerge as a significant centre for advanced boat building in India.
