BHUJ, GUJARAT, (Economy india): Police have busted a suspected fake liquor manufacturing unit in Gujarat’s Kutch district and seized nearly 10,000 empty and filled bottles of a popular Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) brand, officials said on Wednesday.
The action comes days after a hooch tragedy in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district claimed 13 lives, raising fresh concerns over the illegal manufacture and distribution of liquor in the state.
According to officials, the police uncovered the suspected illicit liquor operation during a crackdown in Kutch. A large quantity of bottles, including both empty and filled bottles bearing the label of a popular IMFL brand, was recovered from the premises.
Three persons have been detained in connection with the case, officials said. Police are investigating their alleged role in the illegal liquor manufacturing and distribution network.
Further investigation is underway to determine the source of the liquor, the extent of the operation and whether other people are involved in the suspected counterfeit liquor trade.
Gujarat is a dry state, where the manufacture, sale and consumption of alcohol are prohibited under state law, except for certain legally permitted exemptions.
The latest seizure comes amid heightened scrutiny of illegal liquor networks in the state following the recent Bhavnagar hooch tragedy.
