WASHINGTON, (Economy india):Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday met senior executives of leading Canadian financial institutions, including Sun Life Financial and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), and called for greater investment in India amid the country’s strong economic growth.

During her bilateral meeting with Sun Life Financial President and CEO Kevin D. Strain in Toronto, Sitharaman highlighted the recent liberalisation of India’s insurance sector. She pointed to the increase in the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit in the insurance sector from 74 per cent to 100 per cent, along with the government’s vision of achieving “Insurance for All by 2047.”

The discussions focused on India’s resilient economic growth, expanding domestic market and macroeconomic stability. Sitharaman also highlighted India’s rapidly developing digital and physical infrastructure, which is creating new opportunities for global investors.

The Finance Ministry said the meeting explored opportunities for long-term investments in India, particularly as the country continues to strengthen its economic fundamentals and expand its financial and infrastructure ecosystem.

The minister’s outreach to Canadian financial institutions comes as India seeks to attract more foreign capital to support investment, infrastructure development and economic expansion.

With a large consumer market, improving infrastructure and policy reforms across several sectors, India remains an important destination for long-term institutional investors. Sitharaman urged Canadian financial firms to take advantage of these opportunities and further deepen their investment presence in the country.

The meetings are also expected to strengthen financial and investment ties between India and Canada and encourage greater participation by Canadian institutions in India’s growing economy.
