DEHRADUN, (Economy india): The Kulagad bridge on the Dharchula-Tawaghat road in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district was damaged on Wednesday after a landslide triggered by falling stones and rocks amid continued rainfall in several parts of the state, officials said.

Officials from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) said the bridge suffered damage after stones and rocks fell onto the structure. The incident has disrupted road connectivity along the Dharchula-Tawaghat route, which is an important road link in the border district.

Following the incident, BRO teams immediately began efforts to restore connectivity. Personnel and equipment are being deployed to clear fallen rocks and debris from the affected stretch and assess the extent of damage to the bridge and road.

The Dharchula-Tawaghat road is strategically and economically important as it connects several remote areas of Pithoragarh. The route is also used by local residents, commuters and vehicles carrying essential supplies.

The latest incident comes amid ongoing rains in Uttarakhand, where mountainous areas remain vulnerable to landslides, falling rocks and road blockages. Continuous rainfall can weaken slopes and increase the risk of debris falling onto roads and bridges.

Authorities are keeping a close watch on vulnerable stretches and have advised people travelling through affected mountainous areas to remain cautious. Restoration work on the Kulagad bridge and the adjoining road is expected to continue until safe connectivity is restored.

Officials said efforts are being made on priority to reopen the route and minimise inconvenience to people living in and travelling through the region.
