A towering figure in Jharkhand politics and a lifelong advocate for tribal rights, Soren passed away earlier this morning, prompting condolences from leaders across the political spectrum.

“A Leader Deeply Connected to the Ground” โ€“ PM Modi

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi wrote:

“Shri Shibu Soren Ji was a grassroots leader who rose to great heights in public life with unwavering dedication to the people. He was particularly committed to empowering tribal communities, the poor and the marginalized. His demise is deeply saddening. My condolences to his family and admirers. Spoke to Jharkhand CM Shri Hemant Soren Ji and expressed my sympathies.”

A Legacy Rooted in Tribal Rights and Social Justice

Shibu Soren, widely known as “Guruji” among his followers, was a founding leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Over several decades, he emerged as the voice of tribal India, relentlessly advocating for land rights, forest justice, and the welfare of the marginalized.

He served as:

  • Union Coal Minister
  • Three-time Chief Minister of Jharkhand
  • Member of Lok Sabha for seven terms

His political journey spanned over 50 years, marked by both mass movements and mainstream leadership.

National Mourning and Political Reactions

Leaders from across party lines, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, BJP’s Amit Shah, and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, offered tributes to Soren’s long-standing public service.

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, Shibu Soren’s son, is reported to have been by his fatherโ€™s side during his final moments. The state government is expected to announce a state mourning period shortly.

End of an Era in Jharkhand Politics

Shibu Sorenโ€™s demise marks the end of an era in tribal leadership and grassroots politics in eastern India. His contributions in shaping the identity of Jharkhand as a separate state in 2000 remain etched in India’s political history.
