Customs Officials Recover Nearly 20 Kg of High-Value Cannabis from Bangkok Arrivals
VARANASI (Economy India): In a major anti-smuggling operation, customs officials at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi arrested six Thai nationals, including three women, after seizing hydroponic cannabis worth more than ₹19 crore from their possession.
The accused were intercepted during the screening of passengers arriving on Air India Express flight IX-215 from Bangkok on Saturday, officials said.
The seizure is being viewed as one of the largest recent drug busts at an Indian airport and highlights growing concerns over international narcotics trafficking routes linking Southeast Asia with India.

Suspicious Baggage Leads to Major Drug Recovery
According to customs and police officials, the six passengers came under suspicion during routine security and customs checks after arriving from Thailand.
A detailed examination of their luggage led to the discovery of hydroponic cannabis concealed inside plastic packets hidden in trolley bags.
Officials recovered approximately 19.7 kilograms of the contraband during the operation.
The estimated international market value of the seized narcotic substance exceeds ₹19 crore.
What is Hydroponic Cannabis?
Hydroponic cannabis is a premium variety of cannabis cultivated using hydroponic farming techniques, where plants are grown in nutrient-rich water solutions instead of soil.
The product generally commands significantly higher prices in illegal drug markets because of:
- Higher potency levels
- Controlled cultivation methods
- Better quality consistency
- Increased THC concentration
- Strong international demand
Law enforcement agencies have increasingly reported attempts to smuggle hydroponic cannabis into India from foreign destinations.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine:
- The origin of the narcotics
- The intended recipients in India
- Possible links to international drug trafficking syndicates
- Previous travel history of the accused
- Financial transactions associated with the smuggling operation
Officials are also examining whether the suspects were acting independently or as part of a larger organized network.
Growing Focus on Airport Drug Smuggling
Indian customs and narcotics agencies have intensified surveillance at major international airports amid rising concerns about cross-border drug trafficking.
Airports receiving flights from Southeast Asian destinations remain under particular scrutiny due to increasing instances of narcotics smuggling.
Authorities have strengthened:
- Passenger profiling systems
- Advanced baggage screening technologies
- Intelligence-sharing mechanisms
- International law enforcement cooperation
- Customs enforcement procedures
These measures have resulted in several high-profile drug seizures in recent years.
Strict Legal Action Expected
The accused are expected to face charges under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, one of India’s strictest criminal laws.
Under the NDPS Act, offences involving commercial quantities of narcotic substances attract severe penalties, including lengthy prison terms and substantial fines upon conviction.
Officials indicated that further interrogations are underway to identify potential domestic and international links connected to the case.
Strategic Importance of Varanasi Airport
Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport has witnessed increasing international passenger traffic in recent years, particularly from destinations in Southeast Asia.
As passenger volumes grow, enforcement agencies have enhanced vigilance to prevent misuse of air routes for illegal activities such as narcotics trafficking and contraband smuggling.
The latest seizure underscores the importance of continued monitoring and intelligence-based enforcement at international entry points.
The seizure of nearly 20 kilograms of hydroponic cannabis valued at over ₹19 crore represents a significant success for customs authorities and highlights the persistent threat posed by international narcotics trafficking networks.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to focus on uncovering the broader network behind the smuggling attempt while strengthening measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
