Union Minister accuses Congress of vote-bank politics; says limiting the national song dishonours freedom fighters

Patna, August (Economy India): Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday criticised the Congress over its decision to sing only the first two stanzas of ‘Vande Mataram’ at party events, calling the move an “insult to Bharat Mata.”

Chouhan, who was in Patna for a day-long visit, accused the Congress of engaging in what he described as vote-bank politics over the singing of the national song.

Chouhan Questions Congress Decision

Reacting to the Congress’ decision, Chouhan said that restricting the rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’ to its first two stanzas was disrespectful to the country and to those who sacrificed their lives during the freedom struggle.

“The Congress decision to sing only two stanzas of ‘Vande Mataram’ is an insult to Bharat Mata,” Chouhan claimed, adding that the decision showed disdain for the thousands of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

‘Vande Mataram’ and India’s Freedom Movement

‘Vande Mataram’, written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, has played an important role in India’s national movement and has long been associated with the country’s freedom struggle.

The song was adopted as India’s National Song by the Constituent Assembly in 1950, while ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was adopted as the National Anthem.

The issue has periodically generated political debate, particularly around the song’s historical significance and its use at public and political events.

Political Debate Intensifies

Chouhan’s remarks come amid a broader political debate over the manner in which ‘Vande Mataram’ should be rendered at Congress party programmes.

The Union minister alleged that the party’s decision was motivated by electoral considerations and accused Congress of pursuing vote-bank politics.

The Congress has its own position on the matter, with the controversy likely to remain part of the wider political discourse surrounding national symbols, history and freedom-movement traditions.

National Symbols Remain Politically Sensitive

Debates surrounding ‘Vande Mataram’ often touch upon questions of national identity, history and political symbolism. Supporters of a fuller rendition argue that the complete song represents an important part of India’s freedom struggle, while discussions over its use at public events have also involved historical and cultural considerations.

Chouhan’s latest comments add another political dimension to the issue, with the BJP leader strongly opposing the Congress’ decision.
