Conglomerate Targets 18 GW Nuclear Capacity as India Accelerates Clean Energy Transition

New Delhi, July 19: The Naveen Jindal Group (NJG) has initiated discussions with leading global nuclear technology companies, including France’s EDF and US-based Westinghouse Electric Company, as it advances plans to develop a large-scale nuclear power portfolio in India.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the diversified steel-to-ports conglomerate is also holding discussions with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to explore technology partnerships for future nuclear power projects using Large Module Reactors (LMRs) with capacities of 700 MW and above.

₹2 Lakh Crore Investment Planned

The group aims to establish nearly 18 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power capacity across multiple Indian states with an estimated investment of ₹2 lakh crore.

If implemented, the proposed projects would represent one of India’s largest private-sector investments in nuclear energy and significantly strengthen the country’s clean power infrastructure.

Supporting India’s Nuclear Vision

The proposed expansion aligns with the Government of India’s long-term objective of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power generation capacity by 2047, supporting the nation’s energy security, industrial growth, and net-zero ambitions.

Nuclear power is expected to play an increasingly important role in India’s future energy mix by providing reliable, low-carbon electricity alongside renewable energy sources.

Global Technology Collaborations

The discussions with international technology providers are expected to focus on:

  • Advanced nuclear reactor technology
  • Large Module Reactors (LMRs)
  • Engineering and project development
  • Safety systems and operational standards
  • Long-term technology partnerships

The collaboration with global technology leaders could help accelerate the deployment of modern nuclear infrastructure while bringing international expertise to India’s growing nuclear sector.

Partnership with NPCIL

The Group is also exploring collaboration with NPCIL, India’s state-owned nuclear power operator, to evaluate technology options and project development opportunities.

Such partnerships are expected to strengthen the implementation of future nuclear projects under India’s evolving nuclear energy framework.

Boost for India’s Energy Transition

Experts believe increased private-sector participation could accelerate investment in nuclear infrastructure, enhance domestic manufacturing, create skilled employment, and support India’s transition toward a low-carbon economy.

The proposed investment also complements India’s broader strategy of expanding renewable energy, strengthening grid stability, and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
