West Bengal Couple Allegedly Killed Delhi University Academic to Seize Ancestral Property Worth Crores
New Delhi (Economy India): In a shocking case that has stunned the academic community and residents of the national capital, Delhi Police has solved the murder of Delhi University Assistant Professor Devosmita Paul within three days of the crime. Investigators have arrested a couple from West Bengal who allegedly travelled nearly 1,400 kilometres to Delhi to carry out the murder as part of a property-grabbing conspiracy.
According to police officials, the accused were tenants in a valuable ancestral property owned by the victim in West Bengal and had allegedly been attempting to gain control of the property. When Professor Paul began pressuring them to vacate the premises, the couple allegedly planned her murder to eliminate any legal obstacle to their ambitions.
The case has highlighted how property disputes continue to fuel serious crimes across the country.
Body Found Inside East Delhi Apartment
The victim, Devosmita Paul, was an Assistant Professor at Shivaji College under Delhi University and lived alone in her apartment in Vasundhara Enclave, East Delhi.
Her body was discovered inside her flat after family members became concerned when she stopped answering phone calls.
According to police, the victim’s sister informed authorities after repeated attempts to contact her failed. Upon reaching the apartment, family members found the door locked from the outside. When the lock was broken and the flat was entered, Professor Paul was found dead.
Police teams, forensic experts, and crime scene investigators immediately reached the location and began collecting evidence.

CCTV Footage Became Key Breakthrough
Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the residential complex and quickly identified a suspicious couple entering the building on the day of the incident.
Police officials said the accused appeared to have carefully planned their movements.
The couple reportedly arrived in a private cab and deliberately avoided using the lift. Instead, they climbed the stairs to reach the sixth-floor apartment.
Investigators believe this was done to avoid attracting attention and reduce the possibility of being captured clearly on surveillance cameras.
The CCTV footage showed the couple remaining inside the flat for approximately 30 minutes before leaving the premises.
Child Brought Along to Avoid Suspicion
One of the most startling revelations in the investigation was that the accused allegedly brought their child along during the visit.
Police suspect this was done to create the appearance of an ordinary family visit and avoid raising suspicion among security personnel and residents.
Officials believe the couple entered the apartment under the pretext of meeting Professor Paul and used the opportunity to execute their plan.
The strategy initially helped them evade immediate suspicion, but forensic evidence and CCTV footage eventually led investigators to them.
Property Worth Crores at Centre of Murder Plot
According to the police investigation, the motive behind the crime appears to be a high-value property dispute.
Professor Paul had inherited a property in West Bengal after the death of her maternal grandfather. The property, reportedly worth several crores of rupees, had become the focus of a dispute between the victim and the accused tenants.
Police sources indicate that the accused were reluctant to vacate the premises despite repeated requests.
As legal and personal pressure mounted, investigators believe the couple decided to eliminate the owner in an attempt to strengthen their hold over the property.
The case demonstrates the extreme lengths to which individuals may go in disputes involving valuable real estate assets.

Personal Life Under Strain
Police officials also revealed that Professor Paul’s personal life had faced challenges in recent years.
She was married in 2017, but the relationship reportedly experienced ongoing difficulties. Due to persistent marital disputes, the couple separated in 2022.
Since then, Devosmita Paul had been living independently in Delhi while her husband resided in Bengaluru.
Investigators clarified that the current evidence points primarily toward the property dispute as the motive behind the murder.
Swift Police Investigation
Delhi Police has received praise for solving the high-profile murder case within a short span of time.
The investigation involved:
- Examination of CCTV footage.
- Forensic analysis of the crime scene.
- Tracking travel records.
- Identification of suspects across state borders.
- Coordination between Delhi and West Bengal police teams.
The breakthrough ultimately led officers to the accused couple in West Bengal, where they were taken into custody.
Growing Concern Over Property-Linked Crimes
Experts note that property-related disputes continue to be among the leading causes of violent crimes in India.
Increasing urban property values and inheritance-related conflicts have resulted in a rise in civil and criminal litigation involving land and real estate assets.
Law enforcement agencies frequently encounter cases where financial interests and ownership battles escalate into serious criminal offences.
The murder of an academic professional over an alleged property dispute has once again drawn attention to the need for stronger legal safeguards and faster resolution of property conflicts.
Investigation Continues
Police officials have stated that further investigation is underway to establish the complete sequence of events and determine whether any additional individuals were involved in the conspiracy.
Authorities are also examining communication records, financial transactions, and other evidence related to the case.
The accused couple is expected to be produced before the court as investigators seek further custody for questioning.
Meanwhile, the tragic death of Professor Devosmita Paul has left colleagues, students, and members of the academic community mourning the loss of a respected educator.
