A Bangladesh court on Monday sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to a total of 10 years in prison in two separate corruption cases linked to alleged irregularities in the allocation of land under a government housing project.

The verdict was delivered by Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-4, presided over by Judge Rabiul Alam, who sentenced the 78-year-old leader to five years’ imprisonment in each case, according to state-run news agency BSS.

The cases relate to alleged misconduct in the allocation of residential plots under the Rajuk New Town Project in Purbachol, a major housing development on the outskirts of the capital. The court also convicted several other accused, including Hasina’s nephew Radwan Mujib Siddiq and nieces Tulip Rizwana Siddiq and Azmina Siddiq, along with additional individuals.

Sheikh Hasina, who was deposed amid political turmoil, has denied the allegations, while her supporters have described the cases as politically motivated.
