Pioneering sustainability in India’s carbon industry with electric trucks for coal tar logistics

MUMBAI (Economy India): Epsilon Carbon Pvt. Ltd., a key player in the carbon black industry, has taken a significant step towards reducing its carbon footprint by introducing a fleet of electric trucks. This marks the company as the first in India’s carbon sector to use electric trucks for transporting raw materials like coal tar, demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability.

Epsilon’s Push for Green Logistics

The fleet consists of five heavy-duty electric trucks, a move that reinforces Epsilon Carbon’s focus on greener operations. These trucks, with a battery capacity of 258 kWh and a range of 185 kilometers, are set to reduce the company’s CO₂ emissions by 152 metric tons annually. This follows the success of Epsilon’s initial electric truck, which, introduced last year, transported over 29,000 metric tons of coal tar and reduced emissions by 25.4 metric tons.

“With the addition of these new electric trucks, we are looking at a substantial reduction of 127 metric tons of CO₂ emissions,” said Vikram Handa, Managing Director of Epsilon Carbon.

Aligning with India’s Net Zero Goals

Epsilon Carbon’s move aligns with India’s broader climate action objectives, especially the goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070. “India’s road logistics industry handles 70% of domestic freight, and as leaders in the chemical industry, we see the integration of electric trucks as a crucial step towards sustainability,” said Handa. He also emphasized that the company’s carbon black and specialty carbon facility in Bellary, Karnataka, reflects Epsilon’s dedication to weaving sustainable practices into its large-scale operations.

Growth in India’s EV Industry

The electric vehicle (EV) sector in India is poised for rapid expansion, with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 66%, set to reach a $200 billion industry by 2030. Epsilon Carbon’s proactive adoption of EV technology in logistics is a testament to the company’s forward-thinking approach.

Epsilon’s Commitment to Sustainability

The integration of electric trucks is part of Epsilon’s broader sustainability strategy. This initiative not only reduces the carbon footprint but also sets a new standard in the logistics operations of India’s carbon industry. By adopting greener technologies, Epsilon Carbon aims to contribute to India’s climate action goals and pave the way for a more sustainable future.
