ADELAIDE, (Economy india): Birds and crocodiles may look completely different, but they are surprisingly close relatives on the evolutionary tree. Scientists have been studying how these two groups, which share an ancient ancestor, developed such dramatically different abilities.
Both birds and crocodiles belong to the archosauriform group, which emerged around 250 million years ago during the early Triassic period. Their evolutionary paths later separated into two major lineages. One eventually produced modern crocodiles and alligators, while the other gave rise to dinosaurs and, ultimately, birds.
Despite their common ancestry, modern crocodiles are ectothermic animals, meaning their body temperature largely depends on their surroundings. They also have relatively low metabolic rates and generally conserve energy, although they can produce short bursts of powerful activity when hunting or defending themselves.
Birds evolved in a very different direction. Their dinosaur ancestors developed high metabolic rates and efficient respiratory and circulatory systems, allowing them to generate large amounts of energy internally. These adaptations became crucial for active lifestyles and eventually supported powered flight.
The key difference is therefore not simply the presence of wings. Flight requires enormous amounts of energy and oxygen, along with lightweight bodies, powerful muscles and highly efficient systems for delivering oxygen to tissues.
Over hundreds of millions of years, birds accumulated adaptations that made sustained flight possible, while crocodilians retained a body design suited to life in and around water.
Scientists say the comparison between the two groups provides an important window into evolution. Their shared ancestry shows how dramatically different body forms and lifestyles can emerge from the same ancient evolutionary starting point.
