Veteran Central Banker to Lead Foreign Exchange and Financial Markets Regulation Departments

Mumbai (Economy India): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Monisha Chakravarti as its new Executive Director (ED) with effect from August 3, 2026, strengthening the central bank’s leadership in key financial and regulatory functions.

Prior to her elevation, Chakravarti was serving as Chief General Manager-in-Charge in the Department of Supervision, where she played an important role in overseeing India’s banking supervision framework.

Over Three Decades of Central Banking Experience

A career central banker, Monisha Chakravarti brings more than 30 years of experience at the RBI across multiple critical domains, including:

  • Banking Supervision
  • Foreign Exchange Management
  • Government Accounts
  • Bank Accounts
  • Financial Regulation

Her extensive experience is expected to further strengthen RBI’s regulatory and supervisory capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

As Executive Director, Chakravarti will oversee two strategically important departments:

  • Foreign Exchange Department (FED)
  • Financial Markets Regulation Department (FMRD)

These departments play a crucial role in managing India’s foreign exchange framework and regulating financial market participants.

Leadership Roles at RBI

During her distinguished career, Chakravarti has held several important assignments.

She has:

  • Served as Banking Ombudsman, handling customer grievance redressal.
  • Been a member of the Technical Committee constituted to review the format of the RBI’s Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss Account.
  • Worked extensively on regulatory and supervisory reforms within the central bank.

Educational Background

Monisha Chakravarti holds:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the University of Delhi
  • Master’s Degree in Business Economics from the University of Delhi

Her academic foundation and decades of regulatory experience position her well for her expanded leadership role.

Significance of the Appointment

The appointment comes at a time when India’s financial sector is witnessing rapid changes driven by:

  • Growing digital payments
  • Expanding foreign investment
  • Evolving financial markets
  • Increasing cross-border capital flows
  • Strengthened regulatory oversight
